6 Expert-Approved Tips to Keep Your Eyes Healthy When Gaming

Hickey · May 13, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Gaming is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world, and it’s only getting more popular. However, as with any form of entertainment, there are some risks associated with gaming including eye strain and fatigue. They are often caused by any activity that requires you to look at a screen for an extended period, and gaming is no exception. As vision problems are becoming increasingly common among gamers, it’s important to be aware of the dangers.

Luckily, there are several simple things you can do to protect your eyes and keep them healthy while gaming. In this article, we’ll outline six of the most effective ways you can keep playing your favorite game without putting your vision at risk.

Use Blue Light Filtering Glasses

Many gamers choose to wear special glasses that filter out the blue light to help reduce eyestrain and fatigue. Blue light is a type of high-energy visible (HEV) light that our eyes are particularly sensitive to, so filtering it out can be very beneficial for your vision health. Many people find that wearing these glasses helps them avoid headaches and migraines, making them an ideal choice for anyone who experiences these types of symptoms after playing video games for long periods. As stated by the folks from BlockBlueLight, many of our customers report being able to play for hours on end without any discomfort or strain whatsoever. They come in both prescription and non-prescription options, so they’re perfect for anyone whether they wear glasses or not.

Take Breaks Regularly

One of the most important things you can do to protect your eyes when gaming is to take regular breaks from the screen. This helps minimize eyestrain by giving your eyes a chance to rest and recover, which is especially important if you tend to game for extended periods. Some experts recommend taking a break every 20-30 minutes or so, but this will depend on the length and intensity of your gaming sessions. Regardless of how often you take breaks, be sure that you’re getting up and moving around during these times, rather than simply focusing on something else on another screen such as your phone or laptop.

Adjust Display Settings

Most games give you some degree of control over how the game appears on your screen, and it’s important to adjust these settings according to your personal preferences and needs. This can help reduce eye fatigue by making it easier for your eyes to process the information on the screen. For example, you may want to increase the font size or change the color scheme to something easier for your eyes. Additionally, many games allow you to adjust the field of view (FOV), which can also help reduce eye strain.

Play in a Well-lit Room

Your eyes have to work harder to process the information on the screen if they’re not being properly illuminated. As a result, your eyes may get tired more quickly and you may experience more eyestrain. Additionally, playing in a dark room can also lead to headaches and migraines, so it’s best to avoid this if possible. Therefore, try to play your games in a room that has plenty of natural light, or if you’re playing at night, make sure to have some good artificial lighting.  If you find that you need additional light while gaming, try using a desk lamp or floor lamp instead of turning on the overhead lights as this can be more disruptive to your eyes.

Invest in a Good Gaming Monitor

The quality of your gaming monitor can also have a huge impact on how easily your eyes can process the information they’re being shown on screen. Choosing a good gaming monitor with a higher refresh rate (ideally, 144Hz or above), low response time, and appropriate color settings may help alleviate some of the eyestrain you experience while playing games. Additionally, some gamers prefer to use curved monitors for their gaming sessions because these can reduce eye strain by providing greater depth perception and field of vision. They are also quite affordable and may be worth looking into if you have difficulty playing for long periods without experiencing discomfort.

Use an Anti-Glare Screen Protector

If you wear glasses, you may find that the glare from your screen is magnified and makes it difficult to see the game properly. In this case, it may be helpful to invest in an anti-glare screen protector or glasses that can help reduce this issue. This will not only make the game easier to see, but it will also help you avoid staring directly at a reflective surface for long periods and causing further strain on your eyes. Additionally, if you find that the glare from your monitor is affecting your ability to play the game, you may want to try adjusting the position of your monitor or using a different type of lighting in the room to reduce the amount of glare.

Since every person has different eyesight, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for reducing eye strain while gaming. However, by following these tips and making adjustments to your gaming setup that are specific to your needs, you can minimize eye strain and fatigue while still enjoying the games you love. So, experiment with different techniques and find what works best for you so that you can enjoy longer and more enjoyable gaming sessions without having to worry about experiencing excessive eye fatigue and discomfort.
