It is widely acknowledged that hitting the gym a couple of times a week is beneficial for both body and mind.
However, sweating it out once in a while may be hard on your skin. Since gyms are the cesspools of bacteria and germs, it is essential to protect your skin both before and after workouts.
Drink a lot of water
It is very important to be sufficiently hydrated while working out. Drinking plenty of water is not only good for your insides but also for your skin. Exercising makes us sweat a lot and this is why it’s very important to replenish the loss of water in your system.
Signs of dehydration may show up on your skin in the form of itchiness, dullness, or even increase visibility of wrinkles and fine lines. Fortunately, drinking water in the gym is not a chore; just don’t forget your water bottle!
Wash your face immediately
After hydrating, this is probably the most important step. On average, we touch our face between 2000 and 3000 times a day! In the gym, it’s probable that you may touch your face even more than usual because you’re wiping the sweat away.
All of this with hands that were touching the shared equipment in the gym which has most likely not been disinfected properly.
Yuck! Bacteria, germs, and other people’s sweat may enter your pores and cause a breakout. Don’t use only water when washing your face. Try implementing modern essential skincare such as gel, cream, or oil facial cleansers.
Moisturize and apply a serum
After cleansing your face following a workout, it’s vital to put back some moisture and add some nourishment to your skin.
A good post-workout moisturizer shouldn’t be heavy, so your pores don’t clog. To prevent breakouts, choose a lightweight moisturizer instead. When it comes to the serums, you should choose one which counteracts redness in the skin and regenerates it. There are also some serums on the market which are specially designed for post-workout skin.
Don’t workout with makeup on
One of the cardinal skin sins you can commit is going to the gym with makeup on. When you work out you sweat and your body temperature rises.
This causes your pores to be more prone to absorbing dirt, making them clogged. Clogged pores lead to blackheads and breakouts.
However, makeup is a source of confidence to a lot of people, and taking that away simply isn’t an option. Don’t fret! There are non-comedogenic foundations that are harmless to the pores, or you can opt for a tinted moisturizer instead.
Sunscreen is essential
If your workout of choice is an outdoor activity, sunscreen is a must. SPFs are one of the skincare products that are most often forgotten and incidentally, it’s one of the most important steps in every fully realized skincare routine.
Sunscreen protects your skin from sun damage which may lead to discoloration, wrinkles, or even cancer. When looking for a sunscreen suitable for prolonged physical activity, make sure that it’s sweatproof.
Tie your hair
If you have longer hair, make sure that before you break a sweat you pull your hair away from your face.
It’s not only germs and bacteria that may cause you to break out. There are also oils in your hair or the buildup from previously used hair products that can get into your pores and cause mayhem.
If you have, bangs make sure you keep those away as well. You can do that with a simple hair clip, or you may want to invest in a headband or a sweatband.
